Two weekends ago, Weez and I went backpacking with my bro and his gf outside of Nederland, CO. We went up to about 8500 ft, so the ground was still snowy and temps got down to mid-20’s (*F) when the sun set.
With the right layers, you can stay warm and dry (to a certain extent; granted, we weren’t camping in <0*F temps). I love all the gear we have and we definitely stayed toasty warm!
We got to the trailhead just before dusk.
Took some pre-trip, silhouette shots.
And started our hike up up up.
We post-holed in some places, but for the most part, the snow was packed down enough that we were glad we left the snowshoes in the car. We hiked in about 30 minutes because the sun was setting fast and we didn’t want to set up camp in the pitch black.
Fortunately where we were had no fire ban, so we were able to make a toasty warm fire while we enjoyed dinner and shared stories and laughs. So many laughs when you’re with my brother and his gf.
One of my favorite things about camping in the snowy months, is the added padding when you sleep! I’m tellin’ ya, I never sleep better. Snow is so soft. Cabo slept like a champ too. She used to spook at night when we camped, but she’s a seasoned vet now.
We woke up to the most gorgeous, Colorado morning.
We hung out around the campsite for a couple hours, taking our time to pack up and pack out.
And then we made our way back to the car! There’s no one who loves snow more than Cabo. It’s a fact.
I’m telling you, this dog, she loves weekend backpacking trips more than we do. And she lives for the car rides back home :)
