Wind-up doll

This morning’s workout entailed 10 laps around this bad boy. 20 x 200m sub 5K race-pace efforts.
The thing about me, is that I’m a wind-up doll. My parents have always joked about that over all the XC and track seasons in HS and college. My best 800m pace is my best mile pace, which is my best 2 mile pace, which is my best 5k pace. I pretty much max out at 6 min miles.

And that is exactly why coaches put me in the longest event during track season. I can’t sprint for beans.

I tried not to get too down on myself when Weez blew by me, after 18 200’s. We’re checkin’ ’em off at consistent 6 min pace, but the last two? Weez feels like he’s gotten no workout at all, so he goes all out and finishes 8 seconds before me. Like it was no big deal.

Psh, Boys.

But what do I know I’m semi-decent at? Trail running.

I love me some trails. And it blows my mind that I haven’t signed up for one of these sooner, but I finally took the plunge today and registered for a real trail race:

It’s happening! And I’m SO excited. I’ve been running on trails for years, so I’m ready to start training for a race on one. I can’t wait to get muddy.

2 5Ks left this spring season (April 17, May 15), then I’ll be hittin’ the trails for my first ever trail race. STOKED.

Are you faster in the long run (like me) or at shorter distances (sprinter, like Weez)
If you’ve ever run a trail race,  tell me about it! Where and how far was it? Did you like it? I’m curious because I want to register for more!

    We could have been separated at birth! I hate anything shorter than an 800. I swear I can run my quarter splits in a longer interval (800, 1,200 or 1,600) than just an all-out quarter!

    Love that you’re doing a trail race–so much fun!

    I’m definitely more like you – never a champion at sprints, but I can keep going and going… [I never ran competitively in school, but I primarily swam 500 meters and above … no 50 meter freestyle sprints for me!]

    Trail running = LOVE. I raced a lot on the trails when I was living in Rochester – we have a very active running community, and some of my running buddies up there got me started. What’s even more interesting to me is that the trails can totally change the competition in a race – on the trails, I can consistently finish ahead of people who blow by me on the road. Of course, there’s the whole “watch where you’re stepping” business, but that just adds to the fun. And I’ve never had as much fun flying down hills on the road as I do on trails! We won’t even mention how much gentler they are on the legs (except maybe the quads!).

    Hope you have a blast training, and racing. We’ll have to catch a trail run together … eventually! :)
