6 days till my first tri!

on

Did I mention that I’m doing my very first triathlon this Sunday? I am! I’m doing the Greeley Sprint Triathlon in 6 days, which will consist of a 500m open water swim, 10 mile bike, 5k run: http://greeleytriathlon.com/ With any luck, I should finish in under 3 hours. Haha, just kidding. But seriously.

Yeah… I’m a little nervous but mainly just stoked about it.

Reasons I’m pumped:
–  my brother is racing with me!
– it’s my first tri!
– I get to test out my fancy new tri wetsuit
– the pride
– the experience
– because it’s on my 25 before 25

Reasons for concern:
– what if my goggles fall off?
– what if I get a flat?
– I haven’t been able to swim (b/c the surgery) since April
– what if I get kicked in the face?

It’s entirely possible that I’ll be the last one out on the course but I don’t even care! This is going to be SO MUCH FUN and I’m stoked that my brother will be racing along side me. Well, technically he can’t bike next to me (drafting/pacing rules) but our plan is to wait for each other at transitions, ride within 5 bike lengths of one another, run side by side, and finish next to each other.

It means the world to me that he’ll be there with me at my first tri (I was there at his first tri, too!). I’m jazzed because I’ll have a small cheering squad too: Weez and my tri buddy Will are coming up to cheer. I’m glad, ’cause someone’s gotta take pictures to capture the moments/awkward transitions/when I fall over while getting on my bike.

So I haven’t gone swimming in a few months? Oh well! So I’ve only gotten to go riding a handful of times this year? Oh well! I had surgery 6.5 weeks ago and gosh darn it, I think it’s cool that I’m able to turn around and compete in a tri this soon after going under the knife.

I know I only have 6 days till “race day” but my game plan is such:
Monday: rest from the weekend’s craziness
Tuesday: 10 mile bike, 3 mile run
Wednesday: open water swim at the res, 30-45 minutes
Thursday: 2 mile run, 800 yrd swim, 2 mile run
Friday: 10 mile bike, 3 mile run
Saturday: 6 mile run, packet pickup @ the expo!
Sunday: Greeley Sprint Tri!

Have you ever done a tri? Send me some of your advice! What should I be sure to do/bring? Any tips on smooth transitions?

Speaking as someone who’s been kicked in the face…you’ll keep swimming. :)

I think it’s so interesting how there are endless variations on tris, especially sprint tris. I’ve done sprints before but only the 750m/20k/5k variety. As far as transitions go, I’d definitely say to make sure you’re familiar with the rules so you don’t get disqualified/lectured. Most tris are very strict about helmets: if you get on your bike before your helmet is properly on (and fastened), or if you unbuckle your helmet before you’re off the bike, you’re out.

Hope the race goes well! :)

Don’t forget your socks! For my first tri, I did not come prepared and ended up with sand in my shoe, rubbing against my feet during the run.
