14 miles (on trails!) in Austin

I could totally live in Austin. Well, except for the summer months. When we went out for our 14 miler on Saturday morning, it was in the mid 80s. Um hello, talk about weather shock for this Colorado girl. I don’t know how you crazy Texas folk do it :)

Despite being a huge city, Austin has some really sweet trails along the river (I never knew!). I was in heaven. A fun city with jungle-like forests and trails? Yes please! The river walk trail was really crowded for the first 3 miles but then we found ourselves running more secluded, technical, rocky trails the farther west we ran.

Parts of the trail were wide and somewhat flat…
Other parts were whindy and narrow…
Other than the occasional runner, I felt like we were all alone out there, which was pretty cool considering where we first started running. There were some pretty neat rock formations along the once river-bed the deeper into the woods we got.
That’s my brother on the far left and Weez in the middle, btw. It felt like a tropical rainforest out there because it was so humid and hot! I was sweatin’ up a storm… something I’m not used to experiencing out here in my dry, mountain state of Colorado. It reminded me of the days when my family and I used to live in Singapore :)

After about 7 miles, we turned around and followed the trails back to where we started. I still can’t get over how cool it was that we were surrounded by huge sky scrappers when we started running but within 3 miles we were in a jungle running on trails. Cheers to you, Austin. You’ve won me over.
As for how my body felt? It wasn’t the best run I’ve ever had. My knee, um, kinda sorta started to hurt, so I’m a little nervous about this weekend’s 20 miler. I keep making promises to the running Gods… “just two more long runs outta these knees, please! Just a 20 miler, a taper weekend to follow, then Boston. Just three more weeks and I promise to lay off distance running for a while!”.

I scheduled a sports med massage for next Monday in hopes of massaging out any kinks in my ITB/hips/quads. After all, my knee has been SO good for me for months now, it’s the least I can do to prepay it.

We’re gettin’ down to the wire now! Boston is in 19 days! 19 days?!? HOLY MOLY. I can hardly wait :)
