On Saturday, ten minutes after Weez proposed and I finally stopped jumping up and down, we took off for our 14 mile long run on Magnolia…
Let’s just say… she’s a beast. She’s tough. She’s hilly. She doesn’t let up. Her ups were long and relentless. Her downs were brief and only met with more up up ups. But we had the most beautiful weather and I’m always up for a good challenge.
Anyways, the stats: We started out at 8245 ft, ran up to 8776 ft, and climbed a total of 1932 ft overall. 14.05 miles in 2:08 (average 9:07 pace). Some miles were certainly slower than others (cough cough, the first half) but overall my legs felt SO good the entire time.
Running Mags is like running on a roller coaster track. The hills aren’t crazy steep but they’re long, relentless, and repetitive. We’d only enjoy maybe 100m at a flat/downhill grade before the quad-pounding, lung-burning would begin again.
You’d round a bend, hoping the uphill would be over and you’d see a brief downhill followed by more uphill. This was a great run to test my mental strength. When I wasn’t staring at my newly decorated hand (hehe) or smiling at the wonderful man next to me, I was thinking about how it would feel to be at mile 20 of the Boston marathon with Heartbreak hill in front of me.
Sure, Mags is a real doosy but the views are ridiculously gorgeous. Oh hello, Longs Peak in the distance.
Mags is a dirt road ‘out and back’ that literally runs into the Peak to Peak Highway after about 7 miles. We had to take a picture with the road sign, obvi.
Turning around and running back to the car wasn’t all just downhill but since we were feeling amped, I really let my legs fly. I felt strong and healthy. And the best part? I didn’t think about my knee ONCE. Does this mean I’ve officially gotten past my injury? I think so! Hooray!
So would I run Mags again? Heck yeah I would! And I can totally see how the Univ of CO XC team runs this every single week during their season. What doesn’t kill ya makes ya stronger!
