Crystallizing boiling water

It’s been cold here for the past 2 days. Real cold. And because I’m a chemistry nerd grad student, I decided to test out an experiment.

Word on the street is that if you throw boiling hot water up in the air on an extraordinarily cold day (in the negatives), the boiling water will crystallize/insta-freeze (creating snow mid-air) before falling to the ground.

So, my lab mates and I boiled up some H2O, grabbed the video camera, and this is what transpired…

Why yes, I am wearing safely glasses and using gloves. Safety first! Don’t mind my incredibly high squeaky voice. Apparently I turn into a chipmunk when I’m excited. But come on, that’s so cool! Science is the coolest!

Meanwhile, it still feels like it’s -19 degrees out and I’m wearing tights under my jeans, a scarf around my neck, and my space heater is on whenever I’m at my desk. Brrrr…

Trying to stay warm,
