This weekend, Weez and I went backcountry camping at Gore Lake (11,451 ft) in the Eagles Nest Wilderness Area. The hike was about 7 miles one way with ~2900 ft of elevation gain. We backpacked in with all our gear, food, water and it took 3:40 hrs to get to the lake. Needless to say, I am quite sore!
This place is seriously beautiful. The first few miles of the hike were among the changing aspens. Gorgeous.
After a few miles the scenery changed from aspens to pines. The trail got pretty steep at one point, so we had to stop to catch our breath every few minutes or so. We only saw one other person on the trail back packing, but he was headed the opposite direction. He told us he saw a mountain lion a half mile from where we were. Sweeeeeeeeet.
After just shy of 4 hours, we arrived at the lake. It’s crazy how beautiful it was.
We set up tent, rested our shoulders, and enjoyed the evening sunset.
Dinner never tastes as good as it does when you’re camping.
The stars that night were insane. I wish there’s a way I could have captured how many we saw. Thousands.
The next morning, we had oatmeal and hot cocoa for breakfast then packed up camp. The hike back was just as breathtaking as it was the day before.
Man, I love Colorado.
