Camping with My Lab Mates!

on

Over the weekend, my lab mates and I went car camping near Grossdam Reservoir. It was a blast! We stayed 3 days, 2 nights and it was the perfect little vacation from the lab and a great bonding time for all of us (not that we weren’t close before the trip!). I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it a hundred more times: I am so lucky to have such a great research group. I dig my advisor, all my lab mates, and we get along so well. Pretty much, we’re awesome.

Not 30 minutes after showing up at the camp site, we had a little visitor…

Oh hey, Mr. Black Bear. And that yellow tent? Yeah, that’s mine. The bear must have smelled some toothpaste in that pack it was pawing. Good times! Fortunately, we didn’t see him again on the trip.

We had a pretty large group, including one of my post docs’ entire family (he has 4 really cute kids). Not everyone from my lab could make it, but we still had an awesome time.

We played corn hole (I got my butt kicked by an 8 year old… more than once), went for hikes, found a waterfall and the reservoir, devoured s’mores, made delicious campfire food, and played Catch Phrase each night.

What what? Is that a picture of me, playing guitar? Weez brought along his acoustic and though the guys were much better, I mustered up the courage to play a little bit in front of the group :) I was nervous, but it was really fun showing my friends my efforts on Goal #11.

When I came home on Sunday, I had to wash my body and hair twice to scrub all the dirt off. Though my clothes are now clean, my sleeping bag still smells like campfire… and I love that smell.

  1. Great photo of the black bear. I’m glad he didn’t tear up all your stuff. :)

That picture of the bear!! Crazy! Sounds like you had a great time. I wish it was camping weather here, but, it’s too dang hot! And yes, the campfire smell is the best!
