Gaining Confidence

3 weeks ago, my weekly mileage was 28. 2 weeks ago, my weekly mileage was 35. Last week, my weekly mileage was 40. This week: Aside from normal runs, I’m going for a 10 miler mid-week and an 18 mile long run. The mileage keeps stepping up, my knee is holding up just fine, and I’m feeling more and more confident about the Cleveland marathon.

On Saturday, I was scheduled to run 14 miles, so Weez and I excitedly took off for Marshall Mesa to run on our favorite trails. I can’t imagine not running on trails. I love running on soft dirt trails that roll up and down in and over the mountains, along the trees, being a part of nature. It’s gorgeous. I’m so lucky to live here.

Not 30 minutes into the run, I totally tripped on a stump and went hurling through the air but managed to save myself from an epic wipe out. Maybe another 30 minutes later, I did the same thing again in front of 2 mountain bikers. They laughed. I’m such a mess.

Right before we turned around half way through the run, we saw a herd of deer, just chillin’ in the trees and Weez got excited. He loves deer. Who loves deer? Personally, they scare me. What? They’re big and have antlers!  Anyways, he was so excited by watching the deer that he, too, tripped on a stump, went flying through the air, and managed to recover in time before hitting the ground. He may or may not have done the same exact thing not 10 minutes later.

We turned around after what we thought was 7 miles and made our way back to my apartment. We finished the run in 2:13hrs, but were pleasantly surprised when we used MapMyRun.com to find out that we ran 16 miles instead of 14! Oops, but yay! I felt good the entire time, and even by the end I felt like I could have gone for another hour or so. Good thing, ’cause a marathon is 26.2 miles, not 16. But I’m finally gaining confidence that I CAN do this marathon, and that it hopefully won’t be as painful/broken/slow as my 5 hour Boulder marathon was last year :)

  1. Sounds like training is going good. Small steps in your overall miles. Watch that ground, you can get messed up if your not carefull. I see it all the time!

    Yay! 16 miles in 2 hrs 13 min is great! Especially on trails out here! I’m glad you weren’t hurt from your fall.

    Good luck on your 18 miler. :)

    How lucky to get to run on trails!!! I pound pavement becaue that’s all I have. You will rock the marathon!
