My First Marathon

September 20, 2009. The Boulder Backroads Marathon.

I had trained so well for that badboy. I followed Hal Higdons Runners World 18-week training plan (Intermediate 1), which included 1 18-miler, and 2 20-milers. After my second 20-miler, I felt ready to GO. I couldn’t have been more excited. Apparently my body had other plans in store.

It was 85 degrees out that day and a few of the aid stations ran out of water. I think I got pretty dehydrated, because at mile 19 I fell to the ground, vomiting. I crawled for a few feet, and when a medic came to my rescue and offered me a ride back to the finish line, I looked up at him like he was crazy. I signed up for this! I was gonna finish.

Well by mile 22, I had no idea what was happening to my legs because my knee starting killing me. Pick axe to the knee kind of pain. It was my IT band (took me 4 months to recover from, afterwards), but to make a long story short, I hobbled, walked, shuffled, and pushed myself forward to finish those 26.2 miles. Took me 5 hours and 12 minutes to finish my first marathon, but gosh darn it, I did it.

Although I’m proud as hell that I even attempted a marathon, I know I can do better. I come from a family full of runners. My dad has done 5 marathons.

My older sister has done at least 4 or 5 now (including one in Iraq where she was serving on a tour of duty).

My brother is a Half Ironman.

Will is an Ironman

I started running when I was in 7th grade. I wanted to be just like my big sister and brother, who were already running XC and track. I’ve been hooked ever since.

Anyhoo, I’m still somewhat broken and my knee hurts me every time I run. I’m lucky though – in all my years of competitive running during XC and track seasons throughout middle school, high school, and college, I’ve never been injured! And, it’s only my IT band. It’s like tendonitis. Going to physical therapy and strengthening it will allow me to fully recover (we hope). I just have to be patient.

Well, my knee is definitely getting better and I’m still on track to run a half marathon with my sister (she’s doing the full) and brother on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I’ll keep ya posted!
