Running everyday in the month of January

With a new year, brings new resolutions! I wanted to get real about my marathon training cycle with something that would challenge me to find time, daily, for running again:

Run everyday in the month of January.

It was lame using sleep as my excuse to only run 2 days a week. I figured I’m probably going to be sleepy whether I wake up early or sleep in to get ready for work at 5:30… no more excuses!

So I wake up at 4:30am to run.
Or pack my running shoes and sneak 2 miles in at lunch.

Even if it’s just for 1 mile, the concept of letting myself take time away from work to take care of myself, is what I needed by making this goal. And it feels really great :)

I’m 12 days in and haven’t missed a day. I ain’t about to miss one either!

Last weekend, Weez and I hit up Forest Park for a 10 miler. Runners in the Portland area rave about this >5000 acre park with 70+ miles of trails. It was awesome and we can’t wait to go back.

Yesterday, I ran along the Rock Creek Path and powerline trail (paved, but still pleasant nonetheless) in town. I was hoping to hit 6.5 miles out (for a total 13-miler), but at 6 miles I came to the end of the trail:

I ran loops around some neighborhoods to finish up 13 miles in 1:45 (8:05 pace).

In other news, Weez and I registered for the Shamrock Run 15k with a big group of our friends!

It sounds like a blast. It’s a huge road race, like the Bolder Boulder 10k. I can’t wait to sport some green Irish pride and run with 35,000 other people around downtown Portland :)

What’s your new years resolution?
What’s the next race on your calendar?

  1. That’s awesome that you have such great trails nearby to run!! I’m slowly upping my distance and ran my longest stretch in a while this weekend…. hopefully running a half marathon in May? Hopefully? LOL
